Plenty of fireworks shows this weekend

Across the area from Algonac to Lexington

By Barb Pert Templeton

As fireworks light up the night sky this weekend across St. Clair County and beyond in celebration of the Fourth of July learning just how the tradition began is definitely of interest.

Many would be surprised to discover that pyrotechnics can be traced back some 2,000 years to rural China. At that time people would roast hallow bamboo stalks in a fire until they exploded with the air inside creating firecrackers literally referred to as exploding bamboo.

Once gun powder began more prevalent and were added to bamboo the fireworks trend spread to Europe. Soon the well-lit noisemakers were being made a regular part of celebrations and in Rome they highlighted the coronation of Anne Boleyn as Queen of England in 1533.

Next, as soon as July Fourth became an annual celebration in the U.S. to mark America’s Intendance Day, fireworks were added to the agenda and have remained in place, in many forms, since.

In fact, the first display happened during the Revolutionary War, which some thought was designed to be a morale booster for the soldiers. The celebration also included firing cannons and guns but that part of the festivities stopped in years to come simply due to safety concerns.

Here’s where you can see fireworks light up the night sky this July 4 holiday:
