Michigan’s DNR Recommends Over $720,000 in Grants for Development of new North Channel County Park.

By Michigan Department of Natural Resources

St. Clair County and the St. Clair County Parks and Recreation Commission are pleased to announce  that development of the new “North Channel County Park” continues to receive generous financial  support from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The County has been awarded a matching grant in the amount of $150,000 from the Michigan  Department of Natural Resources’ “Recreation Passport Program”; as well as the recommendation  from the Trust Fund Executive Board for a second matching grant in the amount of $300,000 from  the “Trust Fund Program”.

The grant monies are in addition to a $270,000 grant that was awarded this fall for the first phase  of development at the new park.

The competitive grants, combined with funding from the County’s annual Parks and Recreation  millage will provide a significant catalyst for public access of this unique waterfront park  and recreational activities for the entire Blue Water Area.

Improvements will begin this year and include parking, picnic areas, accessible pathways, and a  trailhead that services the adjacent segment of the popular “Bridge to Bay Regional Trail”.

The grant funds have made it possible to schedule additional amenities such as restrooms,  accessible pathways from the entrance to the waterfront, fishing and observation pier, an accessible  paddle craft launch and play areas.

The St. Clair County Parks and Recreation Commission is grateful to the Michigan Department of  Natural Resources, the residents of St. Clair County and our partners as we continue to work  together to provide creative and accessible recreation for everyone!
