Ransom Thomas voted the Freep Buffalo Wild Wings Athlete of the Week

Update, March 6: Congratulations to Ransom Thomas of Detroit Cass Technical High School for being voted the Detroit Free Press Buffalo Wild Wings Boys Prep Athlete of the Week.

This week’s poll features four basketball players who had standout performances during the week of Feb. 22-28.

Voting will close at noon on Friday, March 6.

Here are the nominees (listed in alphabetical order by last name):

Ethan Esse, Allen Park Inter-City Baptist

Esse and the Chargers advanced to their third consecutive regional appearance following victories over Inkster American International Academy and Taylor Trillium Academy in the opening round of the MHSAA boys basketball tournament. The senior guard scored 27 points on 10-for-16 shooting (6-for-10 from three-point range) in a 65-33 victory against Inkster AIA on Feb. 25, then, two days later, Esse’s 24 points during a 67-33 win over Trillium came mostly from inside the 3-point line. He shot 11-for-17 in the game, including 10-for-12 on midrange shots.

Mo Jackson, Detroit University Prep Academy

Jackson had 24 points and 12 rebounds in a 66-57 Division 2 district final victory against Detroit Edison on Feb. 27. He started last week with seven points and 10 rebounds in Feb. 25’s semifinal match against Detroit University Prep Art and Design.

Jordan McDaniel, Birmingham Brother Rice

The freshman guard made his postseason debut for Brother Rice last week. McDaniel scored 19 points in Wednesday’s 72-52 win over Birmingham Groves. During Friday’s district final matchup against Bloomfield Hills, he scored 27 points, leading his team to 67-56 victory to advance to the regional semifinals.

Ransom Thomas, Detroit Cass Tech

Thomas led the Technicians on offense with 23 points and eight rebounds in a 66-23 win over King. The junior guard had 15 points, six rebounds and five steals in Cass Tech’s 85-38 victory over Detroit Western on Feb. 25.
