We’re back with another group of outstanding high schoolers in Livingston County.
Each week, high school principals and staffers in Livingston County share their nominees for Student of the Week with The Daily. We share those honorees online Fridays and in print Sundays.
This week’s students were nominated for academic achievements, personal growth, setting an example for others and a commitment to service.
Cayla Marzban, Brighton High School
Cayla is a shining example of academic excellence, determination and innovation. With an impressive 4.31 GPA and recognition as an AP Scholar with Distinction, National Top School Honoree and MHSAA All-State Academic Athlete, her commitment to learning and growth is extraordinary.
Cayla’s passion for biomedical engineering and neuroscience, particularly in the field of neural engineering, reflects her deep intellectual curiosity and her desire to use science and technology to improve lives. Cayla’s creative drive extends beyond the classroom, as she’s currently developing an app to help students predict burnout and reduce its health effects, a project that perfectly blends her compassion for others with her love of innovation.
Cayla’s resilience and work ethic have also shone brightly through athletics. After battling illness and having to completely rebuild her training, she returned stronger than ever, qualifying for and competing in the state cross country meet, where she placed in the top half of the field.
A dedicated four-year member of cross country, track and field and NHS, Cayla is known by teammates and teachers alike for her drive, kindness and leadership. She was even voted “hardest worker” on her cross country team, an honor that captures her spirit. Cayla’s blend of intellect, determination and empathy will no doubt lead her to make a powerful impact in whatever she may choose.
Emelyn Atkinson, Fowlerville High School
Emelyn is a dedicated and accomplished junior whose leadership and commitment shine both in and out of the classroom. A member of the varsity girls’ soccer team, she balances her athletic pursuits with a challenging college prep schedule that includes AP Language.
As the student representative to the Fowlerville School Board, Emelyn serves as a strong voice for her peers and an outstanding ambassador for Fowlerville High. Her hardworking, diligent, kind and thoughtful nature makes her an excellent representative of our student body — a true example of a Gladiator.
Ella Jones, Hartland High School
Ella, a freshman, stands out as an amazing young lady for so many reasons at Hartland High School. She takes her education very seriously and works hard in all of her classes. She asks questions and tries her best at everything she does. Her teachers find her to be extremely respectful and hardworking. Ella loves the freedom and opportunities she has, especially when it comes to her chances to learn and grow as a student.
Ella’s favorite class currently is medical careers and terminology, as her goal is to become a doctor. Ella is also a member of the varsity cheer team, and HHS loves seeing her spirit on Friday nights.
Ella stands out in the Peer to Peer Program. She has compassion for all people and a special place in her heart for students in the Unified Program. She’s at every game, helping and cheering the players on while encouraging everyone to get out and participate. She’s the true embodiment of an Eagle and HHS is so proud.
Isabella “Izzy” Sutton-Sanchez, Howell High School
Izzy is a junior at Howell High School who represents the values of a Highlander. She maintains a strong GPA while balancing academics and athletics as a member of the girl’s lacrosse team. In the classroom, Izzy contributes thoughtful ideas and engages in classroom discussions with curiosity and focus.
Beyond her academic and athletic involvement, Izzy is known for being kind and supportive, helping create a welcoming environment for her peers. Enrolled in several advanced courses and the marketing class that operates The Kilt Shack, she shows reliability, initiative and school pride in all she does.
Griffin Peltier, Pinckney Community High School
Griffin, a senior, is an exceptional leader whose intelligence, creativity and compassion inspire everyone around him. He’s a National Merit Semifinalist, and has pursued every Advanced Placement course offered at PCHS — plus additional virtual AP classes — earning top marks across the board.
Griffin’s drive to make a difference extends far beyond the classroom. He founded and continues to lead Students for DEI and serves as captain of We the People, guiding his team with insight and integrity. As President of the Act2 Theatre Company, Griffin is currently directing the fall play, showcasing his creative vision and organizational skill.
Griffin also leads the PCHS Mock Trial Team, which has achieved multiple state-level victories under his leadership. In addition, Griffin serves as president of the National Honor Society, a representative in Student Government, and an active member of marching band, orchestra and varsity choir. Through his empathy, enthusiasm and dedication, Griffin embodies what it means to lead by example — lifting others up and making a meaningful impact in every corner of PCHS.
Sophia Campbell, Kensington Woods Schools
Sophia, a junior and captain of the varsity volleyball team, demonstrates incredible leadership and determination on the court. This same focus is clear in her schoolwork, where her conscientious and hardworking nature led to her earning all A’s and B’s for the first marking period.
According to one of her teachers: “Sophia has grown so much over the last few years. She has developed a confidence in herself and an internal drive that’s helping her reach her goals and realize what she’s truly capable of. She keeps working hard and improving, and it’s great to see her hard work pay off.”
