When is the next Michigan governor election? Who's running, what to know for 2026

Michigan voters in 2026 will have a chance to decide who will lead their state as its next governor. The race has drawn a trio of top Democratic candidates, a crowded Republican field and an unprecedented independent bid to replace Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

When is the Michigan governor primary election?

Michigan is scheduled to hold the Democratic and Republican primary elections for the gubernatorial race on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2026. Michigan voters can participate in either party’s primary, but not both.

The candidate who receives the highest share of votes in his or her primary will become that party’s nominee and advance to the general election.

When is the Michigan governor election?

Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026 will decide Michigan’s next governor.

Why can’t Whitmer run again?

Whitmer cannot run again due to term limits. In 1992, Michigan voters approved a ballot measure limiting governors to serving two terms. Whitmer was elected to her first term in 2018 and reelected to serve a second term in 2022.

Who are the Democratic candidates for governor?

The Democratic field includes three major candidates: Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson.

Who are the Republican candidates for governor?

The Republican candidates running for governor include former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, Michigan transplant Anthony Hudson, U.S. Rep. John James, of Shelby Township, former Michigan House Speaker Tom Leonard, of DeWitt, Michigan Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt, of Porter Township, former pastor and 2022 gubernatorial candidate Ralph Rebandt and anti-property tax activist Karla Wagner.

Why is Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan running as an independent?

Duggan sent shock waves through Michigan politics when he abandoned his longtime ties with the Democratic Party to announce his independent campaign for governor. He has argued that the two-party system is broken in Michigan’s politically divided state and positioned himself as a leader who can bring lawmakers together across the aisle.

Michigan has never had an independent governor, nor seen a high-profile independent candidate vie for the job. Because he is running without a party affiliation, he does not have to participate in a primary election.

Will Michigan’s gubernatorial election be competitive?

The race is shaping up to be one to watch nationally. The Cook Political Report — an organization that provides election analysis of key contests — rates Michigan’s gubernatorial election a “Toss Up,” a designation for “the most competitive” races in which “either party has a good chance of winning.”

The last three open races for governor saw Michigan voters flip party control of the office. In 2002, they elected Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm to replace outgoing Republican Gov. John Engler. In 2010, they chose Republican Gov. Rick Snyder to replace Granholm, and in 2018, they chose Whitmer to replace Snyder. The 2026 election will decide whether that pattern holds.

What do candidates have to do to qualify for the ballot?

Democratic and Republican candidates must gather at least 15,000 signatures from registered Michigan voters and file them by April 21, 2026. Duggan — as an independent candidate — must file at least 12,000 voter signatures and file them by July 16, 2026.
