Weather warning for SE Michigan includes -25 windchills this weekend

Blue Water Area residents can expect dangerously low temperatures this weekend as millions of Americans prepare for an upcoming arctic blast.

The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory for several southeast Michigan counties that will begin at 1 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, and last until 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24.

According to the advisory, wind chills temperatures will dip to between -15 and -25 degrees.

“The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 25 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes,” the advisory states. “Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures.”

The coldest temperatures are expected between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. Friday and between 9 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Saturday. Wind chills are expected to stay below 0 degrees throughout the advisory.

Ambient air temperatures are expected to be no higher than 4 degrees on Friday and 9 degrees on Saturday. On Sunday, after the advisory ends, the temperature is expected to increase to 16 degrees.

The weather service is estimating half an inch of snow will fall before the advisory goes into effect early Friday.

The weather service is also warning of potentially heavy snowfall on Sunday, after the advisory ends, though the worst of it is predicted to hit south of the Blue Water Area. Port Huron is expecting between 1-3″.

“Several inches of accumulation will be possible, with the highest probability across Metro Detroit and areas south,” the advisory states.

Cold weather tips

The National Weather Service is recommending people keep their pets indoors during the advisory and to keep skin covered with warm clothes if travelling outside.
