U.P. shooting suspect crashes into gas station, sparking fire

The police chase of a shooting suspect came to a fiery end Tuesday in the Upper Peninsula.

On Tuesday evening, Marquette police issued a description of the suspect in a shooting under investigation in the city. Police say the suspect was identified in connection with a call at an apartment in the 600 block of West Baraga Avenue, in which they found two men injured, including one from gunshot wounds, according to a news release.

A Michigan State Police trooper and sergeant from the Negaunee Post found the suspect’s vehicle, but the suspect fled, according to an MSP news release.

The pursuit ended when the suspect crashed into fuel pumps at the Krist gas station at 341 US-41 in Negaunee, causing a large fire.

Troopers safely took the suspect into custody, who suffered minor injuries. No members of the public or law enforcement were hurt in the crash or fire, according to police.

US-41 between Baldwin and Teal Lake avenues was closed Tuesday night while authorities completed their investigation.

Authorities have not released the suspect’s name ahead of his arraignment.

The suspect will be held in the Marquette County jail on multiple felony charges once he is medically cleared, authorities said.
