U-M is Time magazine's No. 1-ranked public university in America

Time magazine has named the University of Michigan the highest ranked public university in America and the ninth-rated school in the world.

The magazine said it based the rankings of the world’s 500 best universities on academic capacity and performance, innovation and economic impact, and global engagement.

“The ranking places emphasis on the extent to which students achieve extraordinary success, for instance in patenting new inventions or rising to leadership roles in business,” Time said in releasing the rankings Jan. 28. “These lists help us understand where students are likely to achieve the greatest success and contribute most to society as the world order shifts.”

The article noted that the United States and the United Kingdom continue to dominate the rankings but Chinese universities are catching up.

Yale University was the highest-rated American university overall, coming in second in the world, behind the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.

Michigan State clocked in at No. 85 on this list. No other Michigan universities made the list.

Ohio State was ranked 33rd.

Michigan received its highest ranking in economic impact, followed by academic capacity and performance and then global engagement.

The study acknowledged its own limitations, notably that different countries report statistics in different ways.

“The study assesses many outputs relative to institutional inputs or country averages to reduce bias from differing contexts,” it said.

Other publications use different criteria for evaluating schools.

US News & World Report ranked Michigan 20th in the United States in its most recent rankings. Forbes listed U-M as the fourth-ranked public university in America behind three University of California schools located at Berkeley, Los Angeles and San Diego, respectively.
