A Huron Township teen is dead after authorities say he was thrown from his e-bike after colliding with a cable.
About 2:50 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, authorities say two 15-year-old boys were riding e-bikes on M-142 in Verona Township when they turned onto what they thought was a road, but turned out to be a business driveway with a cable running across it, said Huron County Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson.
The boys were riding at speeds nearing 25 mph, and neither had their lights on, Hanson said.
The sheriff’s Aug. 3 press release said the boy was thrown from his e-bike when he collided with the cable. The other boy, from Bad Axe, managed to brake before colliding, escaping major injuries. He then called the first boy’s mother, who arrived to take the boys to the hospital around 15 minutes later.
Sheriff’s deputies in Huron County responded at 4:39 a.m. to investigate the crash, arriving at a local hospital where the boy was being treated for his injuries. The boy died of his injuries nearly three hours following the crash, Hanson said.
According to the press release, Bad Axe City Police investigated with help from the Huron County Medical Examiner’s office. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, Aug. 3.
