A teenager from Illinois had to get her foot partially amputated after a boating accident in Mecosta County, according to the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said she was in stable condition after the Aug 2 accident in Morton Township.
Emergency personnel were dispatched at about 2:44 p.m. where a 17-year-old girl was run over by a boat. Police did not say in a release where the accident took place.
The sheriff’s office said an “experienced operator” was loading tubers in the water, and did not realize the boat was in gear. Police said there may have been a shifter cable malfunction.
“Morton Township Fire and Rescue and EMS responded to find the female had severe trauma to her right foot. Aeromed was dispatched and the 17 yr old female from Illinois was air lifted to (Corewell Health in Grand Rapids),” the sheriff’s office said on Facebook.
Alcohol was not a factor in the incident, police say.
The Mecosta County Marine Division was assisted by Morton Township Fire and Reacue, Mecosta County EMS, AeroMed and Meceola Central Dispatch.
