A Macomb County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a male suspect believed to have been in an “altered mental state” Thursday afternoon.
The person who was killed was wanted in connection with a felonious assault and had backed his vehicle into an officer’s motorcycle prior to the shooting, authorities said. A deputy fired the fatal shot after the suspect charged at law enforcement while armed with a weapon, according to a Macomb County Sheriff’s Office press release.
Deputies initially made contact with the suspect around 12:02 p.m. at the intersection of 26 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue, at the border of Chesterfield Township and New Haven, officials said.
He did not comply with deputies’ commands and backed his vehicle into a patrol motorcycle. One deputy fired a shot at the scene.
The suspect then fled westbound on 26 Mile and deputies gave chase. Following a brief pursuit, the suspect stopped his vehicle and exited it armed with a weapon, authorities said. He charged at deputies and one officer discharged their firearm.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fatal shooting.
Chesterfield Township police had previously advised the Sheriff’s Office that the suspect was armed and “was believed to be experiencing a possible altered mental state,” according to the release.
Authorities declined to release additional information, including the deceased male’s identity, what type of weapon he allegedly possessed, how many shots were fired and how many times the suspect was struck.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident,” the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
