Blake Dunn will miss the rest of the major-league season for the Cincinnati Reds.
After injuring his elbow on a throw on June 26, the Saugatuck native has been out of the lineup.
After more tests, Dunn underwent an internal brace procedure on his right elbow on Monday, Aug. 3.
The recovery time expected is six months, which will be long enough to keep him out this year but if things go well, he could be back for Spring Training.
Dunn, 27, was hitting .282 with two home runs, six steals, seven RBIs and 20 runs scored in 38 games. He started the season in the minors but continued to improve rapidly, leading to his call-up by the Reds.
The injury occurred in a game against Pittsburgh when Dunn threw home from the outfield.
“I felt a little bit of a pop on the throw home,” Dunn told the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Dunn unleashed a strong throw on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning during that game on June 26.
“There’s no sharp pains in there right now, but there’s certain things that bug it for sure,” he said. “I felt great on the throw (the play) before to third. Didn’t have any issues. It felt good coming out of my hand. And then for some reason something popped on that throw home.”
