SAULT STE. MARIE — A student at Sault’s Malcolm High School was removed from school grounds by police officers on the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 16.
There was a notable police presence seen at the school after a 911 call was made to report a potential threat. A safety hold was initiated at Malcolm High School, which is located in the Soo Township building.
The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police and Sault Tribal Police all responded to the situation. Law enforcement worked alongside school officials to investigate the threat. Officials said that the investigation resulted in a 14-year-old student being removed from the campus before classes began.
According to a joint press release from Chippewa County Undersheriff Ryan Hering, Sault Area Public Schools Superintendent Amy Scott Kronemeyer and Malcolm Alternative Jr./Sr. High School Principal Sandy Sawyer, there was no harm done to any individuals. The student is undergoing evaluation in accordance with district policy and state law.
The safety hold remained in place until the school district could carry out all of the protocols in its emergency operations plan. The hold has since been released and classes have resumed as normal. Additional support services have been made available to students and staff who request them.
Updated information released later in the day from the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook sought to clear up misinformation circulating about the incident. They clarified that no firearm was brought to the school. The investigation remains ongoing and the sheriff’s office will provide updates as more information becomes available.
