Sterling Heights parking lot shooting leads to charges

A West Bloomfield Township resident accused of shooting and wounding a teen in Sterling Heights last weekend has been charged, officials said.

Joseph Maroof was arraigned on Wednesday in 41A District Court, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.

The 18-year-old is charged with discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle and causing an injury, carrying a concealed weapon, as well as uttering and publishing, possession of counterfeit money, authorities said.

If convicted, Maroof faces up to 15 years in prison for discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle and causing an injury, up to five years for carrying a concealed weapon, and up to five years for uttering and publishing.

A magistrate set Maroof’s bond at $200,000 and scheduled his next court hearing for Thursday. The court also ordered him to wear a steel cuff tether and to have no contact with the victim as conditions of bond.

Court records did not list an attorney for Maroof on Friday.

“It is deeply concerning to see young people involved in situations that can have lasting, harmful consequences on their lives,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a statement. “Violence, whether through fights or firearms, does nothing to resolve conflicts between individuals. The allegations in this case are extremely serious, and it is my hope that other young people recognize the potential consequences.”

Police said a group of teens and young adults had gathered Sunday in the parking lot near the Edge Fitness Club on 18 Mile Road near Dequindre Road in anticipation of an arranged fight.

Authorities alleged Maroof fired gunshots in the parking lot while driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck. Detectives said one of the rounds struck a minor in the foot.

After police officers arrived and searched Maroof’s truck, they found counterfeit money from a safe and a lock box in the vehicle.

Officials for Edge Fitness were not immediately available Friday for comment.

Other Metro Detroit residents have been recently accused of being involved in a shooting.

On Wednesday, the suspect and the victim in a shooting that happened last month outside of a Detroit high school during a basketball game were charged. Officials said both were armed, and it was unclear who was the aggressor.

Last week, a Detroit teen accused of shooting and wounding a hospital security guard this month was charged.

This month, a Livonia man accused of shooting and wounding a father and son outside of a Garden City bar on New Year’s Day was ordered to stand trial.
