St. Michael honors Class of 2026 valedictorian, salutatorians

PETOSKEY — St. Michael High School will celebrate its largest-ever graduating class during its commencement ceremony on Friday, May 22. 

The 12 seniors are the school’s 10th graduating class.

Sloane Hayes is graduating at the top of her class as valedictorian, while Clare Gengle and Margaret Mercer are co-salutatorians. 

Sloane is the daughter of Roy and Lauren Hayes, While in high school, she participated in volleyball, tennis, the Student Leadership Team, Quiz Bowl, theater and choir. 

After graduation, Sloane plans to study biology at Hillsdale College. 

Clare is the daughter of Mark and Elizabeth Gengle. While in high school, she was active in the Pro Life Club, the Student Leadership Team, basketball, softball, volleyball and Quiz Bowl. 

After graduation, Clare plans to attend Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio and double major in theology and catechesis. 

Margaret is the daughter of Joshua and Lori Mercer. During high school, she participated in Quiz Bowl and in student government leadership. 

After graduation, she plans to attend North Central Michigan College and obtain an associate’s degree in art.
