Social Security says these 2 baby names were most popular in 2025

Across the United States in 2025, Olivia and Liam were the most-registered baby names, marking a seventh consecutive year both names held the top spot, according to the U.S. Social Security Administration.

The most popular baby names remained mostly consistent with minimal shifts in the top 10 rankings.

“Charlotte climbed to second place among girls, ending Emma’s six-year run in the runner-up slot. A top-10 fixture for years, Ava dropped from the list entirely — replaced by Eliana, which debuted at No. 10. On the boys’ side, the top four names — Liam, Noah, Oliver, and Theodore — held their places,” according to SSA, which published its annual list of top baby names by state on Friday, May 8.

Social Security releases the list of the 1,000 most popular baby names each year in honor of Mother’s Day. Additionally, the SSA lists the fastest rising names for the past year. All names are from Social Security card applications for births that occurred in the United States.

Social Security began compiling the baby names list in 1997. The most popular names by state will release on May 14.

Liam has been the most popular boys name every year since 2017, it was second in 2014-16, third in 2013, and sixth in 2012 — the first year it reached the top 10.

Olivia has been in the top 10 since 2001 and has been No. 1 since 2019.
