It’s just one lap around the track – 400 meters.
It takes the best high school boys teams less than 45 seconds to complete the journey.
Going that fast leaves no room for error.
St. Mary Catholic Central didn’t make any errors while winning the Division 3 state championship in the 400 relay on May 30.
The Falcon quartet of Cole Reinhardt, Gavin Swartout, Vince Harris and Brady Reinhardt did it faster than any team in Monroe County Region history with a :42.2 clocking at narrowly eclipsed the previous record of :42.22 set by Monroe in 2015.
“I’ve watched the race probably 30 times,” SMCC coach Roman Smith said. “Even my mentor (his high school coach Troy Baumer) said he didn’t know of the handoffs could be any more perfect.”
Imperfection the year before led to the perfect performance.
“Last year one of our guys got elbowed during the exchange and dropped the baton,” Cole Reinhardt said. “We didn’t end up finishing.”
Three of the four members of the relay returned this spring. They were determined not let it happen again.
“We’ve been working on our handoffs,” Harris said. “We got them almost perfect. We just had to do our job. … It was redemption by domination.”
Each runner had clearly defined jobs.
“Cole gets us off to an incredible start,” Smith said. “He is really good out of the block and makes up a lot of the stagger. Gavin is a top-end speed guy. We usually have the lead by the time he gives Vince the baton. Brady is a fantastic finisher.”
They followed the script perfectly at the state finals.
“In that first leg, my job is to keep the stagger or break it,” he said. “After I handed off to Gavin, it felt good to see him in front when he handed to Vince.”
Reinhardt, a junior, got to watch the rest of the race after handing off. He sprinted to the finish line after seeing his freshman brother complete the state-championship run.
“It felt pretty surreal,” he said.
Swartout, who came into the finals seeded 23rd in the 100 meters rose to third place, gave SMCC a solid lead heading into the third leg.
“As soon as Cole got the stick to me, I just had to get it to Vince as fast as humanly possible,” he said. “Then I just stepped off into the infield and watched Brady win the race. I just let it all soak in.”
Harris appreciated the work the first two runners did to get him the baton in first place.
“We had a decent lead, then I handed off to Brady and he extended it even more,” he said. “I was totally excited. I just put my hands in the air and watched him.”
SMCC’s freshman finisher wasn’t going to be caught after Harris gave him the baton in first place.
“I was confident after I got the handoff and saw I was in front,” Brady Reinhardt said. “I knew we were going to win.”
Crossing the finish line first was a defining moment in his budding athletic career.
“Everything we worked for all year came down to that race,” he said. “It was all relief.”
The 400 relay was the only Region boys record to fall this spring. A list of the top performances in each event follows.
