Smart Solutions: Spring home decor trends to refresh your space

Now that spring has finally sprung, your home can follow suit with the latest selections to spruce up your rooms. You can start with some inspiration from these seasonal pieces.

Gardner White CEO Rachel Stewart recently returned from High Point Market in North Carolina, where she saw the latest furniture and accent trends, such as prevalent patterns and shapes. “There were right angles on everything; curved sofas, chairs and tables that are a little softer,” she says. “Scallops were also permeating everything and they are really pretty. There were a lot of traditional prints like plaids that blend with modern silhouettes.”

Bold palettes and patterns are back. “I was delighted to see a ton of color; deep beautiful ones like terra cottas, and green is really hot right now,” adds Stewart, who also mentions other popular picks like apricot, olive and plum.

Organic elements remain in demand. “They are not necessarily new, but natural materials like linen, stone and wood are everywhere,” she says. The same can be said for hardworking performance fabrics. “I don’t know why you wouldn’t buy them,” adds Stewart. The latest rugs often feature performance fabrics. These durable materials can also make it hard to tell current outdoor furnishings from their indoor counterparts.

Seasonal accent pieces and multipurpose furniture can enhance your home. “Accessories make a room look more put together,” she says. “Upholstered ottomans add a little something. We’re also seeing oversized cocktail tables and a lot of sectionals with embedded wood trays that look elevated.”

Customization from domestic vendors like American Leather takes weeks, not months, for deluxe sleeper sofas and chairs with a streamlined feel. “You would never know they were recliners,” adds Stewart. “We focus on strong domestic manufacturers like Norwalk. You can customize anything and get it with speed.”

Other trends include more eclectic bedrooms with a little color from an upholstered headboard with blue stripes. “At GW Home in Detroit, we have a lot of one-of-a-kind pieces like a beautiful green leather headboard,” she says.

Additional statement pieces at that location include works from local artists. “We have a lot of artist partnerships,” adds Stewart. “We are really leaning into floral for the season with accessories like vases. There is lots of color like accessories with huge flowers that are really pretty.”

For those who like to host at home, round dining tables have been a popular option. “I love a circular; you can actually engage with people at the table,” she says. “They are adjustable and super easy; no more leaves that you have to store in the basement with mechanisms that are too heavy. The mechanisms are pretty seamless and the leaf storage is in the table.” For added comfort, upholstered dining chairs with performance fabrics make the perfect pairing.

In addition to comfort and ease, adaptability matters, especially for those who work from home without a dedicated office space or simply need an occasional change of scenery. “There are more functional pieces like sectionals with embedded technology like chargers and cupholders for coffee,” says Stewart. Conveniences like these may be here to stay.
