Sheriff department recovers body of swimmer missing in Lake Erie

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office recovered the body of a missing swimmer in Lake Erie Tuesday, Aug. 12.

Hussein Afi Hassoun, 23, of Dearborn, was reported missing the evening of Sunday, Aug. 19. He was found about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday by a boater in the water near Sterling State Park in Frenchtown Township.

Hassoun was transported to shore and turned over to the Lucas County Medical Examiner.

The incident was originally reported on Sunday evening, when Hassoun and four other adults were operating a white Baja boat on the lake, several hundred yards east of the Sandy Creek/Sterling State Park boat channel. When they jumped from the boat to swim, Hassoun started struggling and went underwater.

Monroe County Central Dispatch received a call at 5:49 p.m. reporting the incident.
