Repair, dredging projects coming to Petoskey marina

PETOSKEY — Some repair work is set to take place at the Petoskey City Marina in the next few weeks.

During their meeting on May 18, the city council approved a contract with R.B. Lyons from Charlevoix in the amount of $94,230 for ice damage repairs.

“This is a periodic maintenance issue, particularly when we get heavy ice in the marina, fluctuating water levels,” said Parks and Recreation Director Kendall Klingelsmith. “It’s going to be a little bit of a challenge because the ice was on the marina late, this bid didn’t get out until late, so we’re going to have to do some marina shuffling with boats. It’s certainly something that we can’t predict, but it is something that we’ll need to address.”

City officials estimate the repair work will take about a week to complete, and they are hoping to begin the project in mid-June.

“There will be some maneuvering. It’s not ideal. It’s not the greatest time of the year to do this,” said city manager Shane Horn. “So we’re going to have boat owners move around while we do this work, but hopefully we can get in and get out with limited disruption.”

The council also approved an agreement with the Michigan Department of Natural Resource Waterways Grant Program for an upcoming dredging project.

Klingelsmith said there were significant depth issues last year between the D and C piers due to sediment movement and low water levels.

“I did have this bathymetric survey on this,” he said. “We did a real comprehensive bottomland survey, which indicates the depth of every slip in the marina as well as the main channel and as far up the river as we could go.”

This year, due to heavy snowmelt and rainfall during the spring, Klingelsmith said water levels are up about 18 inches.

“This year, it’s been good,” he said. “But the plan is to get this out and get this dredged this fall so then we can dredge the entire marina after the season.”

According to agenda materials, the total project is estimated to cost $401,500. The state grant amount is for $200,000, and the remaining cost will come from the city’s Marina Reserve account.

A five-year permit application has been approved by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy for this project.
