Police investigating shooting near Battle Creek Central High School

The Battle Creek Police Department and Battle Creek Public Schools released a joint statement, calling a Monday, Sept. 8, shooting near Battle Creek Central High School an “unacceptable incident.”

“While the incident was not school-related, its proximity to the high school is deeply concerning to both Battle Creek Public Schools and the Battle Creek Police Department,” the statement said.

Police responded to the incident north of the school about 3 p.m.

Officials said a verbal altercation occurred between a group of individuals in a vehicle and a 15-year-old and 16-year-old on foot.

“The individuals involved are known to each other, and the conflict originated outside of school. During the incident, an undetermined number of shots were fired,” according to the joint statement. “A student bystander was struck and sustained a non-life-threatening injury. The student was treated and released. No other injuries were reported.”

“Community conflicts that spill into areas near our schools have a lasting impact on our students, creating fear and emotional harm,” said Kimberly Carter, superintendent of BCPS said in the statement. “Let us be clear: BCPS will not tolerate behaviors that threaten the safety or peace of mind of our children. Together with law enforcement and community partners, we are taking immediate steps to protect our students and ensure our schools remain safe spaces for every child.”

School’s response:

The two students involved in the altercation have been removed from school while the investigation continues.

“This is a serious matter, and we’re responding accordingly,” said Police Chief Shannon Bagley. “We’re doing everything we can to protect our kids and our community, and to ensure those responsible are held fully accountable.”

The incident remains under investigation.
