Pellston clay target team sees three in top-15 of state rankings

PELLSTON — It was another impressive spring for the Pellston High School clay target team, which captured a championship in its conference.  

At the state level for the trap event, which consisted of 2,168 athletes, three Pellston team members ranked in the top 15, including Jace Kerr, who was tied for No. 1 overall, Braden Sutton, who was No. 8, and Nick Bennett, who was 13th. Nathan Tennant (91st), Wiigwaas Craven (177th) Brayden Newman-Barr (310th), Landyn Mallory (570th), Elias Hutchinson (727th) and Myles Young (1,453rd) also were a part of the state rankings.

Kerr, Sutton and Bennett finished 1-2-3 in Pellston’s conference, while Tennant was seventh, Craven claimed 12th, and Newman-Barr came in at 21st. Mallory (37th), Hutchinson (45th) and (Young (74th) rounded out the Hornets at the conference level.  

In the conference for skeet, Pellston finished sixth. Kerr was second in the state and first in conference.  

Members of Pellston’s team will compete in the clay target state finals in Mason on Friday and Saturday, June 19-20, marking the fourth year the Hornets have participated in the finals. It’s also the third year that Pellston athletes have been invited to compete at the national level.  

“I know I say all the time how proud I am, but I could not be more proud of all of the athletes on the team,” Pellston coach Kathleen Blust said. “We are small, but holy cow, we are mighty.”
