Detroit — The Detroit Tigers recalled Wenceel Perez to the roster on Friday, a move to replace an injured Parker Meadows after an outfield collision in Minnesota on Thursday.
Perez will be in the lineup on Friday night in a series opener against the Miami Marlins, manager AJ Hinch said.
Meadows, in a corresponding move, is going on the 10-day injured list.
Meadows broke the radius bone in his left arm near the wrist, Hinch announced on Friday afternoon in Detroit, along with being diagnosed with a concussion and getting five stitches in his cheek/lip where he bit it upon colliding.
“And unfortunately, it’s not one thing or two things,” Hinch said. “It was three things that he has to deal with. One will heal, really with stitches, but this game’s not always fair.”
The Tigers are placing Meadows on the injured list for the broken arm, and not the concussion, Hinch said. While the concussion symptoms could linger, the expectation is that the broken radius will take the longest to fully heal.
Hinch added that the Tigers do not know the exact timeline for Meadows to return, and that it depends heavily on the prognosis with the fracture. How much medical attention Meadows ultimately needs is unclear, still, and Hinch didn’t rule out that Meadows might require surgery. Follow up appointments in the following days and weeks will clarify the picture around Meadows.
Meadows is also going through a concussion protocol, Hinch said.
“Obviously we’ll go through the same protocols to make sure he’s healthy and taken care of,” Hinch said.
Meadows remained in Minnesota overnight after the collision, but is cleared to return to Detroit as of Friday, Hinch said. Meadows’ wife flew to Minneapolis to be with him, the manager added.
The latest injury for Meadows is one in a growing list. He missed multiple stints in 2025, including opening the season injured and completing a rehab assignment before his season debut in June of that year. He’d go on the injured list again later in the season, and wasn’t a stranger to the designation in 2024, either. He’s had arm inflammation, quad strains and now a broken arm.
“So it — for him to suffer another set of injuries on a play that, so unfortunate for him,” Hinch said. “And I feel for him.”
Meadows goes to the IL batting .250 with two RBI, three steals and three runs scored in 12 appearances.
Along with the addition of Perez to the Tigers’ active roster, Matt Vierling and Javy Baez figure to play in center field for Detroit with Meadows out. Zach McKinstry could also be an option to return to the outfield. Hinch said calling up touted prospect Max Clark, who has started red hot in AAA with Toledo, was not a consideration.
With Baez slated to be in center field more, Hinch said rookie Kevin McGonigle will play more at shortstop. Hinch expects McGonigle’s time at shortstop to mirror Baez’s shifts in center field.
Riley Greene, who collided with Meadows in the left-center field gap on Thursday in Minnesota, is none the worse for wear, Hinch said, and that he’s more upset about having injured his teammate. Greene finished the game Thursday.
“I think Riley was shook up more about his boy and one of his close friends, you know, being involved with him,” Hinch said. “But he came out of it unscathed. So were fortunate in that regard because that could have been, you know, really nasty for both of them.”
