HILLSDALE COUNTY — Congratulations to North Adams-Jerome baseball freshman Desman Lawless. Lawless became the fifth HD Mechanical Heating, Cooling and Plumbing Supply House Athlete of the Week for the spring sports season and the first Ram to win.
The freshman had a big week for the Rams, helping them win two games on the mound in Week 5. He had six strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings against Litchfield in a 10-4 final, giving up just three hits and two earned runs. In the 15-1 win over Pittsford, the freshman had 11 strikeouts in five innings. He gave up just one earned run on seven hits. For his week at-bat, he had six hits, three doubles, five RBIs and six runs. He won the award with 33.37-percent of the overall vote.
Runner-up honors went to Reading freshman MaKenzey Penza. In one doubleheader, Ranger MaKenzey Penza had two homers, one double, two RBIs and three total runs scored. One of her homers helped the Rangers take a game against Stockbridge.
The Hillsdale Daily News choice award honoree for Week 5 was Pittsford softball player Madison Pickford. Pickford was one of the top performing athletes regardless of sport in Week 5. The freshman had 12 hits, six doubles, one triple, 11 RBIs and seven runs helping the team win three games in Week 5.
