Just over a year after the restaurant’s closure, there are potential plans for the property formerly home to The Spoon, also known as The Gateway Spoon.
During a study session April 14, officials on the Holland Planning Commission discussed plans for a proposed Meijer mExpress store and gas station at 633 E. 24th St.
The Spoon, launched by Gateway Mission, operated for just over 15 months before closing in 2025. That project involved the demolition of a former Denny’s and a brand new building, finished in 2023.
According to renderings provided by Meijer, the convenience store and gas station proposal would demolish that building.
The plan calls for a 3,650-square-foot store with six pump islands and 12 gas pumps, as well as site and landscape improvements.
Meijer representatives indicated they’re looking to acquire the property from Gateway Mission. They added the plans presented aren’t set in stone and could be adjusted to meet required rear setbacks.
Commissioner Brooke Anderson commented on potential traffic impacts, specifically by the planned main entrance off 24th Street.
The project is less than a mile away from an existing Meijer retail store and gas station on 16th Street. That location would remain open, according to representatives, as the company places an emphasis on standalone gas stations.
The Spoon opened to the public in October 2023 as a partnership between Gateway Mission and Creative Dining Services. Located adjacent to Gateway Center, the restaurant offered dine-in and to-go options for breakfast and lunch, along with a separate café with additional seating and a grab-and-go counter for coffee, tea and baked goods.
Gateway used the eatery to provide employee training and development opportunities to program students.
