Music heats up halls across Michigan State campus

The weather is frigid, but the MSU College of Music will be filling the university’s performance halls with melodies designed to warm the hearts of its audiences.

It starts on Friday, Jan. 23, with a celebration of 250 years of American music. MSU artists Jane Bunnell, a mezzo-soprano, and Marc Embree, a bass-baritone, will be joined by Elden Little on piano for an evening performing songs composed at the birth of America to today. The eclectic mix sets out to sing an overview of the country finding its own distinct voice. This concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at Cook Recital Hall.

On the next day, Saturday, Jan. 24, opera singers will fill the Fairchild Theatre starting at 3 p.m. for the annual gala, titled this year “A Celebration of the Beautiful Voice.” Graduate students from the MSU Vocal Arts Program will perform arias and scenes from well-known operatic repertoire, with selections from classics to modern masterpieces.

An annual favorite returns to the Fairchild on Monday, Jan. 26. It’s the celebration of Mozart’s birthday, this year marking his 270th. The annual tradition features an evening of Mozart’s chamber music, starting at 7:30 p.m. After the concert concludes, audience members can indulge in birthday cookies.

Other upcoming events include:

The Newfound Chamber Winds will spend a week in residency at MSU holding master classes in horn, bassoon and clarinet. They’ll have a session where they read student works and another networking lunch to talk about music careers. Then, on Feb. 4, they will hold a public concert at Cook Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Newfound Chamber Winds commits to contemporary performances through flexible ensemble formats. They focus on living composers and inventive repertoire that pushes the boundaries of traditional chamber wind music.
