Heat advisories in Michigan cover Ottawa, Kent, Montcalm, Isabella, Midland and Bay counties, and those to the south, including the thumb. As of July 24, three northeast counties were added: Arenac, Iosco and Gladwin.

Hazardous weather outlooks were issued for counties across Michigan because of the chance of thunderstorms late on July 24.

In southern Michigan, temperatures will range in the upper 80s to lower 90s, with heat index values ranging from 100 to 105 degrees.

In southwest Michigan, heat index values could reach 103 degrees on July 24.

The heat index will be around 102 degrees, the Detroit NWS office said on X.

“Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening,” the National Weather Service said. “Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.”

The weather service Gaylord office said northern Michigan should expect hot and humid conditions, with highs in the upper 80s.

Nationally, heat advisories are in place from Nebraska to West Virginia and from Wisconsin to the Gulf Coast. Mississippi, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee and Kentucky are all seeing extreme heat warnings.

What are heat warnings, advisories?

An Extreme Heat Warning is issued when extremely dangerous heat conditions are expected or occurring.  Avoid outdoor activities, especially during the heat of the day. If you must be outside, be sure to drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks in the shade. Stay indoors in an air-conditioned space as much as possible, including overnight. Check on family and neighbors.

An Extreme Heat Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for an extreme heat event but its occurrence and timing is still uncertain.

A Heat Advisory is issued for dangerous heat conditions that are not expected to reach warning criteria. Consider postponing or rescheduling outdoor activities, especially during the heat of the day.
