Michigan's 2025 Christmas tree has been chosen. When the 68-foot spruce will reach Lansing

A 68-foot tall spruce tree from Sault Ste. Marie has been selected as Michigan’s 2025 official state Christmas tree, the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget said on Thursday, Oct. 2.

Sault Ste. Marie resident Linda Reid donated the tree, the state’s 39th official Christmas tree, in honor of her grandparents, Lawrence and Nettie Richey, the department said in a press release.

“I was shocked when I found out our tree was selected as the 2025 state Christmas tree,” Reid said. “I don’t remember a time when the tree wasn’t in the backyard, but my grandparents played an integral role in my life since I was a young girl, so it means a lot to be able to make this donation in their honor.”

Last year’s 60-foot spruce was donated by Eagle residents Rich and Dorcas Albertson.

What to know about the 2025 Michigan Christmas tree.

When will the tree be cut down?

Workers will harvest the tree on Thursday, Oct. 30, and transport it to the Capitol with help from the Michigan Association of Timbermen, the Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association, and DTMB’s Christmas tree crew.

When will the tree arrive in downtown Lansing?

The spruce will arrive in downtown Lansing Saturday, Nov. 1, where it will be placed at the head of Michigan Avenue for the 2025 holiday season.

Once at the Capitol, local Boy Scout troops will continue the tradition of untying the tree. The HI-Ball Company of Lansing will provide a crane and crew to hoist the spruce into place near the intersection of Capitol and East Michigan avenues.

When are lights added to the tree? When will it be lit?

The city of Lansing’s forestry team will prepare the tree for the lighting scheme and decorations developed by the Michigan Capitol Commission and the Lansing Board of Water & Light, the DTMB said in the release.

A tree-lighting ceremony is slated for Friday, Nov. 21, during the 41st annual Silver Bells in the City celebration in downtown Lansing. Dignitaries will flip the switch that turns on thousands of twinkling lights at approximately 7:30 p.m. following the city’s 28th annual light parade.

How does Michigan choose the official Christmas tree?

In April, the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget kicked off the search for the tree. DTMB is tasked with the search and harvest of the state Christmas tree.

To be considered, trees must meet the following criteria:

Individuals who would like to nominate a tree email their name, telephone number, a photograph of the tree, and information about its size and location to ChristmasTree@michigan.gov.
