It was an electric night at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena when No.1 Michigan and No. 2 Michigan State concluded their weekend and season series against one another in the annual Duel in the D contest. On Saturday, in front of over 19,000 fans, the Spartans got their revenge, defeating the Wolverines, 5-2.
The win brings the Iron D Trophy back to East Lansing for the third consecutive season, and also avenges a heartbreaking Friday night loss in Ann Arbor. Another result from the win, the Spartans now hold sole possession of first place in the Big Ten standings.
MSU got the party rolling hot and heavy with a 4-0 lead, with goals courtesy of Porter Martone, Charlie Stramel, Gavin O’Connell and Tiernan Shoudy. After Michigan countered with a pair of their own, Tommi Mannisto closed the door with an empty net marker.
With just three series left to play, the Spartans have positioned themselves well to make another run at a third straight regular season Big Ten title.
The Spartans will not be back in action next weekend, getting a bye week before welcoming in Notre Dame on Feb. 19 for a weekend series.
