It’s a time-honored tradition in college sports and a unique and very cool privilege when head coaches have the ability to coach their sons. We have seen this at Michigan State, where Tom Izzo coached his son Stephen on the basketball team, and MSU fans saw on the opposing side this past year as Charlie May played for his father Dusty at Michigan, while Sam Hoiberg played for his father Fred at Nebraska. The Fitzgerald family will have the opportunity to do this at MSU football, now, as Pat Fitzgerald’s son, Brendan, has committed to the Spartans as a preferred walk-on.
Brendan will play wide receiver for the Spartans as part of their 2027 recruiting class, but won’t take up a scholarship slot as a walk-on. Brendan will follow his two brothers, Jack and Ryan, in playing college football. Jack is a tight end for Northwestern, while Ryan is a quarterback at Iowa.
