Michigan football’s recruiting success has extended into 2028 with a commitment from the No. 1 kicker in the class.
Ryan Jung, out of Milton, Georgia, gave the Wolverines a verbal commitment on Saturday, June 20. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound specialist becomes the first to commit to Michigan’s 2028 class. Jung is a five-star prospect and the No. 1 ranked kicker in the nation among juniors according to Kohl’s Kicking.
“Jung had an impressive performance at the 2026 Kohl’s Underclassman Challenge,” his bio on the site began. “He impressed with his leg strength and his command of his ball striking. He scored 18 points in the field goal charting and was the finalist in the field goal competitions. He scored 108.95 in the kickoff charting as well.
“At the 2025 Kohl’s Eastern Winter Showcase in Pittsburgh … he won the kickoff competition for underclassmen, earned a perfect 15 points on field goal charting, and added 106.2 points on kickoffs with a top kickoff of 68 yards and a hang time of 3.9 seconds”
For perspective, Jake Moody was rated No. 14 in 2018 by Kohl’s Kicking, Dominic Zvada was No. 45 in 2022, and Trey Butkowski (the recent transfer from Pittsburgh) was No. 9 in 2025.
Jung, who previously played for IMG Academy in Florida before transferring to Milton, becomes the first high profile special teamer to commit to Kerry Coombs, U-M’s special teams coordinator who joined the staff last December under the previous regime and was one of two people who stuck around through the coaching transition.
“Beyond blessed,” Jung posted on social media.
