We’ve almost made it to Memorial Day weekend.
Major metro Detroit roadways, including Interstate 94 in Wayne County, Interstate 96 and Michigan 14 in Livonia, Interstate 696 in Oakland County and more, are undergoing construction headed into the holiday weekend.The
Michigan Department of Transportation announced project updates and additional closures this week, mostly to begin on Tuesday, May 26, after the holiday weekend, though one emergency-repair closure will take place early Friday, May 22 morning.
As construction continues, roadwork can be weather-dependent and could change. A map of construction locations can be found at Michigan.gov/drive.
Here’s what to know:
I-96, M-14 closure at I-275
Westbound I-96 and M-14 at Interstate 275 will close from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. on Friday, May 22, for emergency repairs, according to MDOT.
All westbound traffic will be detoured to northbound I-275. The detour is to go north to westbound I-96 to southbound U.S.-23 to M-14.
Northbound I-275 near DTW
Beginning Tuesday, May 27, at 9 a.m., the two left lanes of I-275 north of Eureka Road near Detroit Metropolitan Airport will be closed for crews to continue work to fix a large void under the road, according to MDOT.
Crews will remove the pavement, fill the void and repair the road over the course of approximately two weeks, depending on any issues that arise.
M-39 ramp to I-94 closure
From Tuesday, May 26, through Friday, May 29, drivers can expect the northbound Michigan 39 ramp to eastbound Interstate 94 to be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for barrier wall work, according to MDOT.
The detour route is northbound M-39 to eastbound Michigan 153/Ford Road to eastbound I-94. Locals may use M-39 to NB I-75 to I-94, as an alternative.
U.S.-24 lane closures in Taylor
On Tuesday, May 26, work will begin on southbound U.S.-25/Telegraph Road from Eureka Road to Goddard Road in Taylor, reducing traffic to one lane, according to MDOT. Work on the northbound side will begin the following week.
Eastbound I-94 closing in Macomb
The weekend after this weekend, closures for the resurfacing of I-94 between Masonic Boulevard and North River Road in Macomb County start, according to MDOT.
On Friday, May 29, at 8 p.m., eastbound I-94 from Michigan 3/Gratiot to Metro Parkway will be closed until 5 a.m. on Monday, June 1. The following three weekends are also scheduled for closures. The detour is northbound M-3/Gratiot to eastbound Metro Parkway.
