The DeWitt and Lansing Christian boys golfs teams captured regional championships last week.
And they will be among the teams and individuals from Greater Lansing who will be competing in the Michigan High School Athletic Association state finals Friday, June 5, through Saturday, June 6.
Here’s a look at the Lansing area state qualifiers.
DIVISION 1
(At Ferris State’s Katke Course)
INDIVIDUAL
CHRISTIAN HELZER, GRAND LEDGE: The senior earned a trip to the state finals after placing sixth overall at last week’s regional at Dunham Hills in Hartland. Helzer shot a 74 and had the third-best score of an individual not on a team that qualified for the state finals. Helzer was the individual CAAC Blue champion and helped the Comets also finish as the team champion.
DIVISION 2
(At Grand Valley’s The Meadows)
TEAMS
DeWITT: The Panthers were the champions of a regional at The Emerald, finishing three strokes ahead of runner-up Bay City Western. Seniors Justin Steinman and Myles Smith led the Panthers by finishing tied for second as individuals with their rounds of 74. Steinman and Smith each finished in the top three at the CAAC Blue championships and helped DeWitt finish as the team runner-up. This marks the fourth state finals appearance for DeWitt in five seasons.
ST. JOHNS: The Redwings finished tied for third with Mason but earned the final team qualifying spot at the regional at The Emerald for the state finals. Levi Lightner led St. Johns by finishing ninth at the regional. The Redwings claimed the team title at the CAAC Red Championships with senior Elijah Schultz leading the way by placing fourth. St. Johns is in the finals for a third straight season and finished 16th in Division 2 in 2025.
INDIVIDUAL
RJ ZECCHINO, HASLETT: The junior finished sixth at the regional at The Emerald with a round of 76. Zecchino earned the final qualifying spot for states at the regional. Zecchino was the champion at the CAAC Red meet.
DIVISION 3
(At Bedford Valley in Battle Creek)
TEAMS
BATH: The Bees finished third at their regional in Ypsilanti to earn a spot at the state finals as a team. Junior Max McCallister, the CMAC individual champion, led Bath by placing fourth individually at the regional. The Bees were the team champion in the CMAC after going unbeaten in league play.
LANSING CATHOLIC: The Cougars are in the state finals after finishing as the runner-up at their regional in Ypsilanti. Juniors Adam Killingsworth and Carter Tribell each finished tied for 11th to lead Lansing Catholic. The Cougars finished as the CAAC White champion. Lansing Catholic was 15th at the state finals in 2025.
INDIVIDUALS
COLE KLINE, PERRY: The freshman was the top finishing individual not on a qualifying team and placed third overall at a regional in Ypsilanti last week. Kline finished third overall in the CMAC this spring.
HARPER MERCHANT, ITHACA: The junior finished sixth at a regional at Scenic Golf and Country Club in Pigeon to advance to the state finals as an individual. He had the third best score of a golfer not on a state qualifying team.
DIVISION 4
(At Michigan State’s Forest Akers West)
TEAM
LANSING CHRISTIAN: Maddox Mosley was the medalist at a regional at The Medalist in Marshall while helping the Pilgrims capture a team title with a score of 309. Lansing Christian took first by 27 strokes and had Nic Korrey, Cooper Resch and Ben Rottman each place in the top 10. The Pilgrims’ 309 was the best score posted by a Division 4 team at a regional. Mosley, Rotman and Korrey were first team All-CMAC golfers.
INDIVIDUAL
BRODY BECKHOLD, PORTLAND ST. PATRICK: The senior finished ninth individually at the regional at The Medalist to qualify for the state finals. Beckhold had the third-best score by an individual not on a qualifying team. Beckhold was named second team All-CMAC. He gives the Shamrocks an individual qualifier for a second straight season after Landon Simpson reached the finals in 2025.
