The Michigan Department of Transportation is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony for the second component of the Blue Water Bridge Plaza Expansion Project.
The ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6 at the Blue Water Bridge Annex. The event will be open to the public, according to Port Huron City Manager James Freed.
Construction on the Blue Water Bridge Plaza Expansion Project began in 2025 with the goal of improving traffic flow over the bridge. Preparations for the second component of the project began in May as Component 1 was wrapping up.
Component 2 of the project will focus on reconfiguring the southern portion of the plaza. The $300 million project will include relocating tolling operation facilities, building an inspection facility for U.S. Customs & Border Protection, relocating Duty Free Americas and relocating the local access ramp to the west side of the plaza. Freed said the construction will not affect local traffic as the work will be on site.
Construction during Component 2 is expected to last through 2031, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
