LSSU plans new documentary series, ‘Raising State’

A new documentary series by Lake Superior State University aims to tell the story of “a university, a community and the people who refuse to let either fade into the background.”

According to the college’s announcement, “Raising State” will begin production this summer and will explore the deep ties between LSSU and the city of Sault Ste. Marie.

“LSSU has long been defined by people who believe deeply in this place and its potential. ‘Raising State’ is a chance to tell the honest story of this campus and community that continues to choose resilience and opportunity when those things matter more than ever,” said LSSU President Dr. David Travis in a statement.

The series will be people-centered, with faculty and staff, alumni, local leaders and current students all able to take part.

“What stood out to us was the authenticity of the people and the connection between LSSU and the surrounding community,” said series producer Kyle McCutcheon in the announcement. “There is a real human story here that feels much larger than one campus.”

Filming is expected to take place across campus and throughout the surrounding area. Participation is voluntary. Additional details, including release timeline and distribution, will be announced at a later date.
