Local students' art to feature prominently at 2025 Detroit Grand Prix

Drivers and fans will not only see Detroit surrounding the track of the 2025 Detroit Grand Prix — they’ll be seeing it inside of the track, as well.

The Grand Prix, which will take place from May 30-June 1 in downtown Detroit, will feature artwork from several Detroit students to be used on the official poster and as decoration on the track walls.

Eli Archer, 20, a sophomore at the College for Creative Studies in Midtown, had his entry selected as the race’s official poster as part of a competition for CCS design students. The poster features a roller skating theme, with a woman wearing racecars in place of skates racing along the track.

“I wanted to personify Detroit and put Detroit literally in the race,” he said. “The roller skate car shoes just kind of came to me. I liked it and though it was fun, so I just went for it.”

Archer, who is from Zionsville, Indiana, came to Detroit to “experience more,” and now finds himself in the middle of an iconic Detroit event.

“I didn’t know about the Grand Prix beforehand, and I was really inspired to learn about its history and what it meant to Detroit. I’m just very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this and make something meaningful to carry on the tradition.”

Archer said he got his inspiration for the poster’s subject from “Girl with the D Earring,” a mural on Grand Boulevard created by Detroit artist Sydney G. James.

Archer won’t be the only Detroit student featured at the Grand Prix. Two students from the Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan will have their murals shown on trackside barrier walls.

The six murals were unveiled along with the Archer’s poster at an event near the Renaissance Center on May 6. The event was originally scheduled to take place outdoors near the track’s finish line, but was moved indoors because of rainy weather.

Student Ari’onna Harrell of the Boys & Girls Club created four murals for the event and said the opportunity made her “really prideful and excited.” Christian Young created another mural, saying the event was “really cool.”

Indy NXT driver Myles Rowe, who attended the artwork’s unveiling, praised the students for their work and involvement with the race:

“It’s so great to see the youth being involved in the community and really getting to showcase what they’re inspired by,” he said. “I love seeing them embrace actual artwork and actual creativity. You can see me smiling from ear to ear.”
