LIV Golf finally has stopped selling tickets for its team championship in Michigan.
It’s the latest and most-definitive sign that the tournament set for The Cardinal at Saint John’s Resort is not going to happen, amid the league’s funding crisis. The tournament had been scheduled to be played Aug. 27-30.
LIV Golf hasn’t yet made an official announcement about the event being canceled, though multiple reports over the last several months have pointed to that being the outcome. There has been no infrastructure buildout at The Cardinal, which drew tens of thousands of fans during LIV Golf’s team championship in 2025. That was LIV Golf’s first tournament held in Michigan.
LIV Golf still was selling tickets to the team championship in Michigan as of Wednesday night. On Thursday afternoon, on LIV Golf’s website, ticket inquiries were met with the message: “The tickets you were looking for are no longer available.” There was no further information, including details on refunds.
A report from The Telegraph this week said players finally have been officially informed that the team championship in Michigan was off, and last week, a TNT host on the LIV Golf broadcast from the tournament in New Jersey said that next week’s tournament in Indianapolis would now determine the league’s 2026 team champion.
Officials from The Cardinal have declined comment on the tournament’s status, deferring to LIV Golf brass.
LIV Golf is in crisis mode after its chief financial backer, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, announced earlier this year that it was pulling out amid billions in losses since the league’s debut in 2022. LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil announced last week that he had struck a deal with a new lead investor, though the investor wasn’t identified and is believed to hinge on player commitments beyond 2026.
On that front, LIV Golf might’ve just been dealt a massive blow, with The Telegraph reporting Thursday that one of its star players, Jon Rahm, is “resigned” to leaving the league after 2026. He is believed to be owed $100 million-plus. Brooks Koepka left LIV Golf and returned to the PGA Tour this year, and Patrick Reed departed LIV Golf this year, too.
