Jahmyr Gibbs doesn’t have a new contract yet, but the Pro Bowl running back is back at Detroit Lions practice.
Gibbs, who sat out the first six practices of Lions camp while awaiting a new contract, took part in the walk-through portion of practice Thursday, Aug. 6, in Allen Park. After walk-through and stretch, Gibbs went to a side field to work with a trainer.
“Only time will tell,” Gibbs said Monday when asked when he’ll be back in action. Asked if he needs a new contract before returning, Gibbs said, “Nah, it’s not about that.”
Gibbs’ return to the field comes three days after Bijan Robinson landed a three-year extension that made him the highest-paid running back in the NFL, and on the same day Jonathan Taylor landed a deal with the Indianapolis Colts making him the league’s second-highest paid back.
Robinson’s new deal is worth $22.25 million per year, while Taylor’s is worth a reported $22 million annually.
Gibbs, who has two years left on his rookie contract, has two straight 1,200-yard rushing seasons and holds the NFL record for most touchdowns (49) in a player’s first three years.
He has been taking part in meetings and weight room workouts during his hold in.
