Another first for Kevin McGonigle. And this was a big one.
McGonigle hit his first major-league homer Sunday, turning on a 97-mph fastball from Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara in the fifth inning of the series finale at Comerica Park. McGonigle hit the no-doubt blast on the first pitch of the at-bat, sending it 408 feet (with a 108.8-mph exit velocity) deep into the seats in right field.
The home run was the eighth extra-base hit for McGonigle, in his 16th major-league game.
He had three hits as the Tigers beat the Marlins, 8-2, for the three-game sweep.
Dillon Dingler hit his third home run of the season, a three-run shot in the first inning. Kerry Carpenter his third homer, a two-run shot, in the sixth inning.
Tigers ace Tarik Skubal went 5.2 innings before allowing his first hit.
McGonigle became the first Tigers player to hit his first major-league home run since 2024, when Detroit had six players do it: Dingler, Colt Keith, Trey Sweeney, Justyn-Henry Malloy, Wenceel Perez and Ryan Vilade.
