Jeep confirmed Friday it will bring back the off-roading Trailhawk version of its top-selling Grand Cherokee SUV later this year.
The burly “Trail Rated” trim of the Detroit-built family hauler was previously offered only as a plug-in hybrid. But Jeep early this year canceled all of its 4xe plug-in models for 2026 — and along with them died the Trailhawk.
Now, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk returns at an unspecified time later this year, most likely as a 2027 model. Jeep published a first image of the SUV that shows tow hooks, red decals and the signature Trailhawk black hood, meant to reduce glare while four-wheeling.
The brand didn’t provide further details, including on launch timing or powertrain, but it’s safe to expect beefier tires, more ground clearance, improved off-roading suspension, and Jeep’s signature Trail Rated badging.
Jeep also offers a Trailhawk version of its smaller Compass crossover, with other models like the Wrangler already offering numerous stock off-roading features. The brand is expected to eventually offer an off-roading iteration of its all-new Cherokee as well; it was showing off such a concept at the annual Easter Jeep Safari in Moab earlier this month.
Dealers have asked for more Trailhawks as they tend to sell well and command higher prices. The trend of offering off-roading trims that include knobby tires, extra plastic body cladding and other durable features has also spread to numerous other brands in the last couple of years.
Jeep refreshed the Grand Cherokee for 2026 with a facelift and an optional new turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The SUV, which can be had with two or three rows of seating, has recently been the brand’s top seller. In the first quarter, Jeep sold 53,000 of them, a 10% year-over-year increase.
