Jahmyr Gibbs' full Lions contract extension details revealed

Lions superstar Jahmyr Gibbs finalized his record-setting, three-year, $67.5 million contract extension on Thursday.

Gibbs was all smiles on Friday as he addressed the media for the first time since signing his extension that makes him the NFL’s highest-paid running back of all time.

Full contract details of Gibbs’ extension have now emerged. Per Spotrac, $37.7 million is guaranteed for Gibbs at signing. That figure includes Gibbs’ $15 million signing bonus, his 2026 salary, his 2027 salary and $8.25 million of his 2028 salary.

An additional $2.25 million of 2028 salary fully guarantees in March of 2027, $8 million of 2029 salary fully guarantees in March of 2028 and $3.5 million of 2029 salary fully guarantees in March of 2029. Gibbs will also receive a $1 million roster bonus in March of 2030.

Looking at Gibbs’ extension, the big salary cap hits don’t come in until the 2029 ($27.5 million) and 2030 ($27.5 million) seasons, offering the Lions some financial flexibility to work out potential extensions with safety Brian Branch and tight end Sam LaPorta.

It also provides the Lions lower dead cap hits of $6 million in 2029 and $3 million in 2030 should Gibbs suffer an injury or if production dips.

Gibbs’ contract comes with $8.25 million in potential escalators.

Between 2026 through 2028, Gibbs earns an additional $562,500 each season in which he registers 800 or more receiving yards. Gibbs will earn an additional $562,500 in each of those seasons if he registers 800 or more receiving yards and the Lions reach the divisional round. A league MVP award during 2026-28 would earn Gibbs a one-time $750,000 bonus.

Similarly, a second set of escalators kicks in for 2030 based upon Gibbs’ 2026-2029 performance. Gibbs earns $421,875 each season in which he records 800 or more receiving yards. Gibbs would earn an additional $421,875 each season in which he records 800 or more receiving yards and the Lions reach the divisional round. Like the first set of escalators, Gibbs would earn a one-time $750,000 bonus if he wins league MVP.
