Ionia Jail inmates sickened by carbon monoxide buildup, sent to hospital

IONIA — Nine Ionia County Jail inmates were transported to the hospital the morning of Sept. 13 after a carbon monoxide buildup caused by a malfunctioning boiler at the facility made them sick.

The inmates were in a nearby unit and experienced “headaches and nausea,” according to a post on the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

“Correction staff took swift action to remove the inmates from the affected units to fresh air,” it said. “No staff reported any illness.”

Staff from the county’s Department of Public Safety helped locate the leak. It was “isolated by facility maintenance,” said the post.

The inmates “were transported to area hospitals for evaluation, and are expected to make full recoveries and will be returned to the facility once treated,” the post said.
