The owners of a four-store chain grocery store in metro Detroit announced the chain is closing a location.
Hollywood Markets in Troy is closing after facing “intense competition,” according to a Facebook post. The Troy location was built in 1966, and, according to Hollywood Markets’ website, the store opened in 1967 on Maple Road.
An employee who answered the phone at the Troy store told the Free Press that no specific closure date was given, and the owners were not in.
The Welch Family announced the Troy location closure in a Facebook post addressed to its “incredible customers and the Troy community.”
“It is with great sadness that we announce the closing of our Troy location. … “Unfortunately, with the retail climate and intense competition surrounding this store, we have made the difficult decision to close our doors at this location only,” the Welch family wrote.
The decision to close the Troy location, the post read, “will allow Hollywood Markets to keep our business strong at our other stores in Madison Heights, Royal Oak, and Bloomfield Hills, with an eye to a prosperous future.”
Employees at its Troy location will be offered positions at the other stores, the post said.
“We know that we have your trust and appreciate everything the Troy and Birmingham communities have done for us over the past six decades. We will see you down the road!” the post read.
The Welch family’s Hollywood Markets has a long history in metro Detroit, according to the timeline on its website.
It was in 1924 that John Welch Sr. opened the first grocery store in Detroit. Others followed, and the chain eventually grew to seven locations. But, over the years, stores in Lake Orion, Shelby and Rochester Hills closed. Its Rochester Hills location on Rochester Road, which opened in 2007, closed in January 2025 “as a result of differing visions with the plaza’s landlord,” according to its timeline.
Metro Detroit is home to independent and privately owned grocery chains, including Busch’s Fresh Food Markets, Grand Rapids-based Meijer stores, Plum Markets, Hollywood Markets and others.
