It was a memorable weekend for the Philadelphia Flyers, who won twice and are now tied with the Detroit Red Wings and the Ottawa Senators in the NHL standings.
After beating the Red Wings, 5-3, on Saturday night at Little Caesars Arena, the Flyers defeated the Dallas Stars, 2-1, on an overtime goal by Trevor Zegras on Sunday.
The Flyers are tied with Detroit and Ottawa with 86 points, and are just two points out of the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Travis Konecny also scored, and Samuel Ersson made 17 saves and had an assist on Zegras’ game-winning goal for Philadelphia (37-24-12), which is 8-1-1 in its past 10.
Arttu Hyry scored, and Casey DeSmith made 28 saves for Dallas (44-18-12), which has lost five of its past six games and has already clinched a spot in the playoffs.
Philadelphia, Detroit and Ottawa trail Columbus by two points after the Blue Jackets picked up a point in a 4-3 shootout loss against the Boston Bruins on Sunday.
Columbus had a three-goal lead in the third period but Pavel Zacha had two goals and an assist, including the game-tying goal with 11 seconds remaining.
Osgood scores OT winner
Little Caesars’ Max Osgood, the son of former Detroit Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood, scored the game-winning goal in overtime to clinch the U14 national boys championship on Sunday.
Little Caesars beat the Rhode Island Junior Mounties, 5-4, at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth.
Drystan Thomas had a hat trick for Little Caesars, which outshot the Jr. Mounties, 54-22.
Also Sunday, Honeybaked’s U14 girls team won a national title in Rochester, Michigan.
Honeybaked goalie Leighton Francis recorded 27 saves in a 2-0 win over New Hampshire’s Seacoast Spartans.
Sandin-Pellikka scores tying goal for Griffins
Macomb’s Sheldon Dries scored the overtime winner for the Grand Rapids Griffins in a 3-2 win over the Chicago Wolves at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids on Saturday.
Axel Sandin-Pellikka scored the tying goal on the power play, Eddie Genborg had an assist for his first AHL point, Erik Gustafsson added two assists and Sebastian Cossa made 22 saves.
Golden Knights fire coach Cassidy
The Vegas Golden Knights fired coach Bruce Cassidy on Sunday and replaced him with John Tortorella.
The Golden Knights (32-26-16) are third in the Pacific Division this season, but were just 3-5-2 in their past 10 games and 8-15-4 since Jan. 19.
Tortorella was an assistant for the U.S. men’s hockey team that won the gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Milan last month.
Milford’s Thiele wins PWHL debut
Milford’s Amanda Thiele stopped 21-of-23 shots to win her PWHL debut with the Boston Fleet on Sunday.
The Fleet clinched a PWHL playoff spot with a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Frost at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minneapolis.
Thiele, who played her junior hockey in Detroit with Little Caesars, was drafted 42nd overall in 2025 after five seasons at Ohio State.
Riley Brengman (China Township, Michigan) had an assist and Megan Keller (Farmington Hills) had two shots and was plus-1 for Boston.
On Saturday at Little Caesars Arena, the PWHL set a Detroit attendance record of 15,938 in the Montreal Victoire’s 3-1 win over the New York Sirens.
