Historic Mackinac Island hotel, once a fur trader’s home, reopens with luxury upgrades

Just in time for Memorial Day and the start of Michigan’s summer tourist season, Mackinac Island’s Harbour View Inn is unveiling newly renovated and reimagined guest rooms, suites, and gardens.

Since the inn, located at 6860 Main St., closed at the end of October 2025, it has added vibrant new carpet, wallpaper and furniture, including beds and dressers, in its guest rooms.

Along with newly renovated rooms, the hotel also renovated its outdoor garden spaces with designs by landscape architect Jack Barnwell. Instagram reels documenting the renovations show brick being laid, trees and stone walls being installed, plus a limestone fountain imported from France.

The boutique hotel reopened this week. Guests who book for stays May 22-25 or May 29-June 2 can get a 25% with discounted room prices if they book before May 26, according to Harbour View Inn’s website.

The inn, built in 1820 for prominent fur trader Madame Magdelaine Laframboise, has since expanded into a boutique hotel with 84 guest rooms and suites across its Guest House, Carriage House, Château and Cottage House.

Guest rooms range from standard with one queen or king bed to three king-bedded rooms. Prices depend on the room and the date. Prices for one night start above $400, according to the booking feature on the website.

The hotel hosts weddings and offers dining at Pedals Harbour Grille, where guests can bike up for al fresco streetside dining.

The Harbour View Inn is part of the Cotton Collection family of historic boutique hotels, restaurants and experiences in waterfront destinations throughout northern Michigan, according to a news release. Other locations in the Cotton Collection include Hotel Iroquois and Carriage House in Mackinac Island, Bay View Inn and Hotel Perry in Petoskey, and more.
