Here's why you'll see rescue vehicles near St. Mary's Park Thursday

St. Mary Catholic Central High School’s Student Prevention Leadership Team is hosting a mock crash demonstration starting at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 23, in St. Mary’s Park.

According to the Monroe Public Safety Department, the demonstration highlights the dangers of impaired, distracted, and unsafe driving ahead of prom and graduation season. Students will be portraying crash victims while emergency responders conduct a live rescue simulation.

The event is part of “Young, Wild & Drug Free,” SPLT’s alcohol awareness campaign, and is meant to encourage students and families to discuss expectations for safe driving.

“Mock crashes are a dramatic and impactful way to educate teenagers about the devastating consequences of poor driving decisions,” said SPLT advisor Laura Strube. “When students see their classmates portrayed as victims, it becomes real. Our goal is to influence their choices, not just during prom season, but for life.”

This will impact traffic and road access. West Elm Avenue, from Monroe Street to Borgess Avenue, will be closed from 9:30-10:45 a.m. The parking lot for St. Mary’s Park will be closed from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. And there will be increased emergency vehicle presence in the area. The City of Monroe Public Safety Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, Merkle Funeral Services, and Rockwood Towing, will be participating in the exercise.
