CADILLAC ― Who’s heading to states?
Track and field athletes across Michigan were in action last weekend as regional meets from Thursday to Saturday provided a final chance to qualify for the state finals for some and, for others, a final chance to compete in 2026. For quite a few Gaylord athletes that made the trip to Cadillac for the Division 2 regional meet on Friday, May 15, they will also be making the journey to Hamilton High School for the state finals.
GHS athletes secured four regional championships last week, while seven different athletes have punched their tickets to the Division 2 state finals on Saturday, May 30, either through a top-two finish at regionals or by meeting the qualifying time throughout the season.
Sophomore Jimmy Jorgenson won the 100-meter regional championship with a time of 11.66 seconds, sophomore Calvin Cosby won a regional title in pole vault, clearing 15 feet, and senior Ivy Roberts won the high jump title with a leap of 5 feet, 1 inch. The girls 400-meter relay team, led by Roberts, Breona Clement, Lillian Mason and Olivia Reiter, also won a regional title, clocking in a time of 50.77 seconds.
In addition to the relay, Mason also qualified for states individually in the 100-meter, 200-meter and pole vault, setting a new school record at 11 feet, 3 inches at regionals.
Senior Katie Berkshire, a state-title contender in both the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs, will join those state-qualifying athletes at the finals in less than two weeks.
Meanwhile, at the Division 4 regional meet in Indian River, the Johannesburg-Lewiston Cardinals had one of its athletes crowned as a regional champion; junior Danielle Agren won the 3200-meter run with a time of 12 minutes, 57.17 seconds, one of two state qualifiers from JL.
