The Health Department of Northwest Michigan has issued an advisory to stay out of the water on Wednesday, July 2 for Elm Pointe Beach in Charlevoix County.
A water sample taken on Tuesday, July 1 showed an E. coli level of 2,419.6 per 100 milliliters, which recommends no water contact based on Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy water quality standards. The beach is located at 1656 South M-66 in East Jordan. The advisory is posted at the beach.
Retesting results will be released tomorrow.
Water sampling is done by the health department throughout the summer months to monitor E. coli levels at many public beaches. The levels change frequently, as they are impacted by the presence of fowl, waves and more. When a sample comes back that creates an advisory of any type, the water at that beach is sampled again and the results are shared to keep the public updated.
The health department posts beach monitoring reports on social media and weekly at nwhealth.org/beach-monitoring-program.
