PETERSBURG – Dillan Haviland just moved to Petersburg.
What better way to meet his new neighbors than winning their run?
Haviland announced his presence in town by winning the 18th annual Rose Run on Saturday, July 11.
The former Lansing Community College and Northwood University runner covered the course through the streets of Petersburg in 15:09.62, nearly four minutes faster than the runner-up.
That wasn’t a personal best for Haviland, but conditions were far from perfect with 85-percent humidity.
“It was a good workout,” he said. “It went in not knowing if I could get a PR (personal record), but it wasn’t a PR day for sure. I remember starting the first mile in 4:36, then I started slowing down and sinking back. I decided to just have fun.”
The native of St. Johns near Lansing enjoyed running in his new hometown.
“I am local now, so I’ve been running up and down the roads quite a bit,” he said. “To see everyone out there and being surrounded by the community cheering them on was really awesome.
“And it was such a great cause (proceeds go to the University of Michigan’s Rogel Cancer Center). All the people were celebrating together, doing something difficult. It was cool to see.”
Haviland found out about the Rose Run shortly after arriving in town.
“My fiancé and I moved a couple of months ago and settled in the area. We both ran collegiately; that’s a big reason we found each other. … One day I was down at Bob’s Market and saw a flier for the run. It sounded like fun.”
The women’s overall winner was Kaylin Russeau of Dundee, who finished in 20:29.81.
Matt Carpenter of Morenci ruled the Masters Division for men and Megan Tremonti of Monroe was the top woman in that division.
Other male winners were D. Lucarelli of Swanton, Ohio (1-9), G. Melvin of LaSale (10-14), Cale Miller of Amherst, Ohio (15-19), Taylor Shelden of Petersburg (20-24), Wyatt Tipping of Petersburg (25-29), Austin Hagemann of Haskins, Ohio (30-34), Craig Ringbloom of Dundee (35-39), Jaye Biniecki of Monroe (40-44), Craig Pummell of Morenci (45-49), Scott Miller of Amherst, Ohio (50-54), Dennis Auten of Monroe (55-59), Steve Overholser of Toledo (60-64), Ron Estes of Blissfield (65-69), Tony Lucarelli of Swanton, Ohio (70-74) and Ron Carpenter of Hudson (75-79).
