Harvey’s on the Mall to close in September after 40 years in downtown Kalamazoo

Downtown Kalamazoo is losing one of its longtime favorites: Harvey’s on the Mall. The restaurant and bar is shutting down after four decades of rooftop drinks, late-night bar food and loyal patrons.

Owned by Steve and Marie Blinn for the last 19 years, the couple announced the closure on Facebook on Monday, Aug. 19. The establishment’s final day will be Saturday, Sept. 20.

“My wife and I have been in this business for 29 years — 19 years at Harvey’s — and we both just felt like it’s time for a last ‘last call,'” Steve Blinn told the Free Press a day after the announcement.

Steve said he and Marie plan to retire from the restaurant business and offered no other reasons for the closure.

In the Facebook post, the Blinns thanked patrons for their support over the years.

“We have met so many interesting people, made some lasting friendships and employed hundreds of people,” they wrote. “Sadly, our run has come to an end. Please join us in our final weeks for a cocktail and a bite as we say goodbye to an era.”

Located at 416 S. Burdick St., Harvey’s was a favorite stop for concertgoers heading to or leaving the Kalamazoo State Theatre, which suspended operations in late 2024 while seeking new ownership, according to MLive.

While it’s unclear what will happen to the building after Sept. 20, Steve said he and his wife are “looking forward to the next chapter in life.”
